Ridge walk most of the day with only one or two last looks at lake Tahoe. Cross under interstate 80 at Donner pass. Pass a Sierra club hut and camp on a unremarkable spot.
Enter granite chief and go by some ski resorts. Camp a little under Tinker knob. Kept company by the hoards of mosquitoes.
Over Dick’s pass and cross Barker pass and get a nice view of Tahoe with a slight breeze to keep the mosquitoes at bay.
Start at Echo lake with lots of wind. Head past Lake Aloha and camp next to Susie lake. Pass 1100 miles.
Lake Tahoe is big. We packed our resupplys for the next 600 miles.
To route 50 and into South Tahoe for 2 nights.
One day from South Tahoe. Past Showers Lake. Slept o. A nice granite chunk.
Getting close to Tahoe now.
More flowers. A nice spot on the top of a saddle with calm winds.
North from Sonora pass. Lots of pretty flowers.
Poor choice of campsite meant a very cool morning… 23F. An awesome ridgewalk to Sonora pass where we resupplied at Kennedy Meadows North. Crazy how fast the landscape changed.
Over Dorthy pass and out of Yosemite NP and into Hoover wilderness. The mountains change dramatically at the pass; on one side is white granite domes and on the other is brown stuff (I’m no geologist).
Hiking up to Falls Creek. Two days of hiking maybe? Lots of mosquitos though.
Over Benson pass with lots of mosquitoes for company.
Middle of Nowhere
Still alive and well. Not much good cell service for a long while now. Have just a little at the top of a big hill. Nearing Belden, CA. Might have service there and we could do a blog update.
Lots of granite domes north of Tuolumne. Saw some nice water falls near Glen aulin. Slept on a big granite slab to get away from the mosquitoes. Nice sunset.
Took a bus to mammoth lakes to the motel 6 to get our next resupply at Sonora pass set up. We are hoping to make it back to Tuolumne on the bus tomorrow to get back to the trail. It is likely the next service we get will be South Tahoe in 10 ish days. The next section is supposed to be beautiful… but the mosquitoes are supposed to be the worst of the whole trail. Makes us wish we were willing to use deet. But long pants and long sleeve shirt and bandana and hat with head net will have to do. Also hopefully we can get new shoes before leaving mammoth since ours are pretty much dead.
Up and over Donahue pass. Mosquitoes are miserable, hard to enjoy the miles between island and Donahue passes. Once we crossed into Yosemite and dropped to the Lyell fork of the Tuolumne river the mosquitoes disappeared and we had a pleasant walk into Tuolumne meadows where we spent the night.
Up past Agnew meadows and the high trail which was surprisingly beautiful. Over to thousand island lake and then up and over island pass. Mosquitoes are getting steadily worse.
Down to Red’s meadows for a resupply and then a few more miles past Devil’s post pile. Past 900 mile mark.
